HEMEROCALLIS (he-mer-o-KAL-is)
LILIACEAE. 'DAYLILY'. Hardy, free-flowering tuberous rooted Eurasian perennials prized for their showy bloom. Easily grown, pest free, thriving with neglect. Almost any soil, full sun or part shade. Easy to naturalize. forming large clumps. Mixed types germinate at 70°F, with further germination if unsprouted seeds are moved to 40°F.

'DAYLILY'. Seed from a fine collection from the full spectrum of day lilies—colors from yellow and orange through red, purple and pink to near white. Flower sizes from miniature to 6", and many ruffled and a few spider types. Includes named types like Stella De Oro and Catherine Woodbury, and a full range of heights and bloom times. Excellent. Easy but irregular from seed, most germinating in 1 - 8 weeks warm, but some lots need a 4 week prechill.

HESPERIS
—Hesperis matronalis Purple-Violet. (b,h) HESP-6V. Packet: $1.50

'SWEET ROCKET', 'DAME'S VIOLET', 'DAMMASK VIOLET'. Very sweet scented, showy purple-violet, 3/4", four-petaled flowers in large pyramidal clusters from June to August. Hardy biennial or perennial to 3 feet. Eurasia. Space 18". Good cut flower; a few mixed in a bouquet will scent a room. Full sun or part shade. An old-fashioned cottage garden favorite. Germinates in 1 - 2 weeks.


HIPPEASTRUM (hip-e-AS-trum)
AMARYLLIDACEAE. Showy bulbs grown indoors for their late winter & early spring bloom. They may reach blooming size in 2 years if kept growing continually, and not dried off till after the first bloom. Best in rich fibrous soil. Seed may germinate in 2 - 10 weeks, a bit irregularly. Viable 1 - 3 years.

'AMARYLLIS'. An excellent mixture containing red, pink, white, & orange in solid colors and also with stripes, plus tall and miniature varieties from 15 - 24" tall. They germinate easily in 3 - 4 weeks, and some will bloom the second year from seed. Winter hardy throughout the South. Considering the high prices for Amaryllis bulbs, growing them from seed is a bargain way to have nice plants.

IBERVILLEA (ee-ber- VIL-ee-a)
CUCURBITACEAE. Odd vines of the southwest, forming a woody caudex. Good in desert gardens or the warm cactus greenhouse. Rest dry in winter.

Rare caudex-forming cucurbit from Nayarit, Mexico. Vines to 12 feet, with fuzzy leaves and yellow flowers. "Amazing caudex!"—J.L.G.

Large fragrant double flowers in a nice range of colors from red, rose, bicolored, pink, and white, from July to frost. Hardy annual to 2 1/2 feet, doing well in shade with little care. A lovely old-fashioned annual, much nicer than the modern types.

Large bright pink to wine-colored flowers. Hardy annual twiner to 12 feet, with heart-shaped leaves. Introduced by Darold Decker in 1955.

Showy dark wine red flowers profusely produced over a long period. Hardy annual vine to 10 feet or so, with large, heart-shaped leaves. Won the AAS Gold Medal in 1939. A wonderful old favorite. Soak, nick hard ones, germinates in 1 - 2 weeks.

IPOMOPSIS (ip-om-OP-sis)
POLEMONIACEAE. Annual and perennial herbs from the Americas. Related to Gilia, they are easily grown and give a profusion of bloom. Best in well-drained soil and a sunny spot. Germinates in 1 - 2 weeks.

'STANDING CYPRESS', 'TEXAS PLUME'. Vivid scarlet inch-long trumpet shaped flowers, yellow spotted red inside, in long dense spikes in summer. Striking half hardy biennial to 3 - 6 feet, with feathery foliage. SE U.S. Good cut flowers. Germinates in 1 - 2 weeks at cool to warm temperatures.

LAPEIROUSIA (la-pay-i-ROO-zee-a)
IRIDACEAE. Easily grown African cormous plants hardy in the North with winter protection. Showy Watsonia-like flowers. Grow like Gladiolus in light soil and full sun. Good for forcing in the greenhouse. Named in honor of the unfortunate French navigator, La Peyrouse. Germinates readily.

Salmon-pink 1 1/2" flowers with red eyes, in one-sided spikes of 6 - 12. Rare plant with narrow, foot-long leaves. To 4 - 10" tall. S. Africa. Hardy to Zone 4. Good to naturalize in California among shrubs where it is summer dormant. Germinates in 4 - 12 weeks. Now classed as Freesia laxa.

LASERPITIUM (la-ser-PI-tee-um)
UMBELLIFERAE. European perennials with large umbels of attractive white or reddish flowers.

White flowers in umbels in summer. Hardy perennial to 3 feet. Italy. Good in the border. The roots and seeds are used as a condiment, and the seeds are used to flavor a liqueur.

'VARIEGATED TREE MALLOW'. Clustered purple-red 2" flowers with darker veins in the center. Small tree to 10 feet, with 3 - 9" five- to nine-lobed marbled downy leaves. Europe. Very attractive in both foliage and flower, good in the greenhouse or on the coast. Fairly hardy. Nick seed through both outer husk and inner coat, to germinates in 1 - 2 weeks.

LABIATAE. Showy tropical African annual and perennial herbs and shrubs with tubular flowers in whorls. Easy from seed or cuttings. The perennials are nice in California & the South. Full sun.

'LION'S EAR', 'PRINCE'S FLAG', 'THIEF'S HEAD'. Showy, inch-long, bright yellow to orange-red flowers in large heads. Annual to 4 feet, with broad, catnip-like leaves. The flowers are followed by attractive spiny seedheads that are useful in dried arrangements. Africa. Flowers well in a 6" pot. In Africa, night thieves would put the spiny seedheads in their hair to prevent being grabbed when fleeing. The flowers are eaten in Tanzania & the plant has many medicinal uses. Germinates in 1 - 3 weeks.

LEYCESTERIA (lay-ses-TER-ee-a)
CAPRIFOLIACEAE. 'HIMALAYAN HONEYSUCKLE.' Himalayan shrubs with funnel-shaped flowers in nodding spikes. Easily grown outdoors in the South and in sheltered places in the North. Easy from seed, flowers in 3 - 4 years. Interesting plants.

'FLOWERING NUTMEG', 'HIMALAYAN HONEYSUCKLE', 'PHEASANT BERRY'. White 3/4" flowers in pendant 4" spikes, with claret-red bracts, in August - September. Shiny purple-black berries, Strong growing deciduous shrub to 6 feet, with 7" leaves. Himalayas. Our collector writes: "Berries bitter but delicious with sugar and milk. Diluted with water, they make a refreshing drink, sweetened to taste. Unique flavor. My favorite soft fruit."

GRAMINEAE. Important Eurasian grasses grown for ornament, forage, lawns, and medicine.

'DARNEL'. Annual grass to 2 - 3 feet, with typical 'rye-grass' spikes. Europe. Grown for medicine and historical interest in folklore and Bible gardens. Germinates in 1 - 4 weeks.

LONICERA (lo-NISS-er-a)
CAPRIFOLIACEAE. Popular climbers and shrubs, mostly hardy, valued for their often showy fragrant flowers. Most soils are fine. A prechill usually helps germination. Easily grown old favorites.

'WESTERN TRUMPET HONEYSUCKLE'. Orange-yellow 1 1/2" long trumpets in clusters in June and July, followed by orange-red berries. Shrubby twiner to 20 feet, with 4" leaves. W. U.S. Zone 5 or 6. Stems used for weaving by Indians.
